Mobility Worldwide – Sierra Leone was founded on December 4, 2008, by three wheelchair technicians who had trained at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in Tanzania. Lamin Mansaray, Tamba Swaray, and Lansana Nabieu returned to Sierra Leone as the country’s first professionally trained wheelchair technicians, and what they found was a growing stockpile of donated devices that couldn’t be used because no one was available to repair them.
They built Mobility Worldwide – Sierra Leone (MSL) to solve that problem.
For over a decade, the organization grew steadily. By 2015, MSL was meeting 75% of the national demand for assistive devices. By 2019, they were positioned to reach 85%.
Then COVID-19 happened. Funding was suspended, global priorities shifted, and momentum stalled. Since 2020, MSL has been able to meet less than half of annual device requests. The gap between need and capacity has widened every year since.
This is the reality we’re working hard to change.
To ensure all mobility-impaired persons in Sierra Leone have access to affordable, quality, and sustainable mobility aids and support services, empowering them to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
We believe in the power of partnerships and working together with individuals, communities, government agencies, and other organizations.
